Swimming Pool Construction in Surrey: Excavation to Finish
Concrete pool construction from excavation to lining, and full filtration installation. The most demanding groundworks project in domestic landscaping, done by a team with the experience to build it correctly.
What pool construction actually involves
Building a swimming pool in Surrey starts with the most demanding groundworks of any domestic project. Excavation needs to be precise and planned around drainage. The pool profile is formed in concrete, the base blinded, structural pipework laid and the shell built: brickwork steps, rendered walls, light and inlet fittings. Then the liner goes in and filtration is commissioned. Every stage needs to be right before the next begins.
Carmen Landscapes has built conventional concrete pools and carried out pool renovations across Surrey. Craig Carmen leads every pool project personally. The case study on this site follows a complete pool build from the first dig through to the finished, lined and filled result.

The pool build sequence
- 1. Excavation and spoil removal
- 2. Blinding layer and base drainage
- 3. Structural pipework and drain fitting
- 4. Concrete shell and surround
- 5. Brickwork or blockwork steps
- 6. Rendering of walls and floor
- 7. Liner installation
- 8. Filtration and equipment commissioning
- 9. Surrounding paving and landscaping

We're based in Walton-on-Thames and work across North Surrey and the wider Surrey area. Swimming pool construction in Weybridge, Esher, Cobham, Hersham, Shepperton, Woking, East Molesey, Hampton, Kingston upon Thames and Leatherhead — plus pool renovations and relining across the same patch. Craig Carmen leads every pool build personally, and as pool builders in Surrey we handle the groundworks, shell and filtration ourselves rather than subcontracting the parts that matter. Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to build a swimming pool?
A new concrete pool installation typically takes three to six months from excavation to water, depending on size, complexity and ground conditions. We'll give you a specific programme at quote stage.
What ground preparation does a pool require?
Excavation to the pool profile, disposal of spoil, blinding layer, drainage and concrete formwork for the shell. The groundworks for a pool are the most demanding of any domestic landscaping project. This is a core Carmen Landscapes specialism.
Do you build pool shells as well as fitting liners?
Yes. We build the full concrete shell (excavation, blinding, formwork, brickwork or blockwork steps, render) and fit the liner. We can also refurbish and reline existing pools.
Can you refurbish or renovate an existing pool?
Yes. Pool renovation (stripping old render or tiles, repairing the shell, re-rendering and relining) is part of our pool service. We assess the existing structure and advise on what's required.
What filtration systems do you install?
We install sand filtration, cartridge filtration and salt chlorination systems. The filtration specification is matched to the pool volume and use requirements. We advise at design stage.
Do you build swimming ponds as well as conventional pools?
Yes. Swimming ponds (natural swimming pools) are an increasing demand in Surrey. We build these alongside conventional concrete pools and ponds. See our ponds and water features page for more.
