When the time comes to plan a garden patio in Surrey, the first question is almost always the same: what is this going to cost?
Ask anyone who has had a patio laid in the last two years and you will get a different number every time. That is not because tradespeople are making it up. It is because patio pricing depends on far more than square footage.
At Carmen Landscapes we get asked about patio costs most weeks, usually by homeowners in Weybridge, Esher, Cobham and Walton-on-Thames planning a garden project for spring or summer. Here is a straight answer, without the vague "it depends" non-answer.
What Actually Drives the Cost
Three things move the price more than anything else: the material you choose, the groundwork underneath, and access to the site.
Material matters because porcelain, natural sandstone, granite and limestone all sit at different price points before a single slab is laid. Porcelain tends to be the most cost-effective per square metre while still looking sharp. Natural stone costs more but ages beautifully and many homeowners prefer the character.
Groundwork is the part nobody sees in the finished photo but the part that determines whether your patio is still flat and draining properly in five years. A patio laid on a proper compacted sub-base with correct falls costs more upfront than one laid on a thin bed of sand, but it is not close in terms of longevity.
Access matters more than people expect. If materials have to be barrowed round the side of a house rather than tipped straight into the garden, that adds labour time, and therefore cost.
Typical Patio Costs in Surrey (Indicative)
As a general guide for a mid-size garden patio (around 20-30 square metres), most Surrey homeowners are looking at a wide range depending on material and groundwork complexity. Porcelain patios tend to sit at the lower end of that range, natural stone at the higher end, and anything involving significant excavation, drainage or level changes will push the price up further.
These figures move constantly with material costs, so treat this as a general steer rather than a quote. The only way to get an accurate number is a site visit.
Why the Sub-Base Matters More Than the Slabs
This is the part we cannot stress enough. A beautiful sandstone patio laid on an inadequate sub-base will crack, sink and pool water within a couple of winters. A properly compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, correct falls for drainage, and jointing done properly is what separates a patio that lasts ten years from one that needs redoing in three.
When you are comparing quotes, ask what is going underneath. If a quote seems significantly cheaper than others, this is usually where the corners are being cut.
Getting an Accurate Quote
Every garden is different. Slopes, existing drainage, access and soil type all change the picture. The only reliable way to know what your patio will cost is a site visit and a proper quote, not a guess based on square metres alone.
If you are planning a patio in Walton-on-Thames or anywhere across North Surrey, we are happy to come and take a look and give you a proper number.
